FAQ: I want to restyle my home, where do I start?

Over the past week I have been asked this question about 10 times, both online and offline, “I want to restyle my home, where do I start“. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, and will say it again in the future. You always have to start with a plan. I know that we don’t enjoy sitting down and planning, we’d much rather just head to the shops and fill our baskets with lovely things, but you won’t be satisfied with the result.

I help people restyle their homes

As a stylist, this is what I do best, I help people restyle their homes. I have a systematic approach that ensures that you get a beautifully styled home. Obviously, when you hire me, I do all the hard work for you, you give me your ideas and a few days later, bang, on your desk is a styleboard with my suggestions. You give me the go ahead, I do the shopping, delivery, the styling for you at your property. Simple!

It’s ok to do it yourself too

But, for some people, hiring an interior stylist is something that you have not yet done before or you simply want to do yourself, and that’s ok too. I can still help you, by sharing ideas and helping you to develop your own ideas and then leaving you to create and implement your own style plan.

2 Questions I always ask

When I begin a styling job. I ask 2 questions:

“Do you have something that you love that you want to be in or a part of the room, and
How do you want to feel when you are in the room.”

If you have a piece of art that you want in the room, then this can help you to start building a colour palette around it.  If it’s a sculpture, then maybe the shape and lines of the sculpture might help you to introduce patterns or lines.

Think about the mood of the room you are restyling. What mood do you want to create? Do you want a calm, tranquil living room? Or a busy functional creative feel where you can work from home too.

Create a Pinterest board to collect ideas

Collect your ideas on a Pinterest board. These images don’t have to be images of interior spaces, they could just be images that make you feel calm, or images of things that are the same colour as the colour palette that you want to create in your space. Remember to pin a few words on the Pinterest board too, words that describe the mood that you are trying to create. Having a mix of both words and images will help your brain to understand the board when you are done.

Once you have your completed board (share it with me, I’d love to see it) and think about what you currently have in the space. Does it fit in with your moodboard or not? If it doesn’t, then let it go. Send it to the charity shop, give it away or sell it online. You need to clear out everything that doesn’t fit in with your new look.

Now the fun begins

Now that you have created space in the room. Think of items to fill your room that fit both the mood and colour palette you created before. Make a list of these items.  Now the fun begins. Head to online shopping sites to search for items that fit your criteria. Pin images of these items to your Pinterest board.

All that’s left for you to do is decide on your favourite objects, purchase them, and once they are home, style the room.

Give it time too, as you explore, your style might change, be adaptable.

Now go have fun and style your home.
